If you have a relative with dementia, make sure that his or her assisted living center provides quality memory care. When you tour the facility, ask if staff members are able to accommodate all stages of dementia or if the resident will be asked to move if the illness progresses past a certain point. Also ask about the caregiver-to-patient ratio, which should be no higher than 1 to 7 for patients with advanced dementia. In addition, inquire if staff members will develop a formal, written plan of care and if they will be able to assist with all daily living activities, including eating, bathing, and using the restroom. Finally, ask about the memory care programs and activities that are offered to residents and the training the staff receives to care for patients with dementia.
